Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS)


The Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) is a fully online programme, designed for applicants who have a solid undergraduate background in theology and are desirous of being prepared for church related leadership, academically to teach at the undergraduate level, scholarly writing, or doctoral studies. Students will be required to complete eighteen (18) graduate level courses and either a period of internship at a local church or parachurch organization, or a master’s thesis. 

Students without a theological background will be required to complete a maximum of six prerequisite courses before starting the master’s programme.

Pre-Requisites

Pre-requisites are necessary for successfully completing advance level courses in any master’s programme. The MATS at CGST requires students to successfully complete the following courses with at least a “B” grade:

  • Effective Research Writing
  • Biblical Hebrew 1
  • Biblical Hebrew 2
  • New Testament Greek 1
  • New Testament Greek 2
  • Biblical Literature
  • Introduction to Church History

Pre-requisite courses are delivered at the undergraduate level and are not for master’s level credit. They are compulsory for students desiring to enter the master’s programme without a first degree in theology or a similar discipline. 

This masters degree falls under the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.

Degree Awarded: Master of Arts (M.A.)

Duration of Course: 2 to 2 1/2 years

Basic Entry Requirements:
We require a first degree (honours degree with a GPA of 2.7 or higher) from an accredited University or College. Students to be interviewed by the head of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.

Applicants with over ten (10) years' experience in full-time Christian ministry may be considered for matriculation under the mature entry classification, provided other conditions are met.
